Portakal (Orange): A Rescue Story
A Voice from the Ruins
During our search efforts after the earthquake in Hatay, we heard a faint meowing coming from the basement of a half-collapsed building. When we went inside, we found an orange-furred cat — weak, but with bright, shining eyes.
Its fur was dull, its ribs were visible, but the light in its eyes had not faded. We immediately named him Portakal — his orange color and sweet face truly deserved the name.
A Difficult Treatment Process
The veterinary examination revealed a serious condition:
- Severe dehydration — IV fluid therapy was started
- Upper respiratory infection — antibiotic treatment was administered
- Mange — a treatment plan with special shampoo and medication was created
The first days were critical. We monitored Portakal for hours. On the third day, he ate on his own for the first time — this was a huge victory for us.
After two weeks, his fur began to shine again, and he started gaining weight. Every day, he grew a little stronger.
I will never forget the moment Portakal ate on his own for the first time. It may seem like a small step, but for us, it meant everything.
Where Is He Now?
Portakal is now under our permanent care. He has been neutered, fully vaccinated, and we continue his regular veterinary check-ups without fail.
He has a daily routine — every morning, he runs to the door at the same time, knowing it's feeding time. He's a favorite among our visitors, gently head-butting everyone and purring.
